Ms. HEWIG'S SIXTH GRADE MORNING CLASS

LEAF RIMMED FIREPIT

What could be better than to cozy up around this wonderful custom firepit...on a cool evening. Break out the firewood...roasting sticks...and marshmellows!

The 6th grade students drew their interpretation of a variety of indigenous leaves. The leaves were copied in metal by local metal artist Marion Gilliland, http://www.marsue.com/ . ...copied the fine details of each leaf that each student drew.

The iron leaves have been welded around the rim of the firepit in a random and natural pattern.

MS. ROSS AND MS. TANNER'S FOURTH GRADE CLASSES

FUSED GLASS GARDEN TRELLISES

The two fourth grade classes will be making a pair of metal garden trellises. The trellis frames are black clothing fixture grid frames, donated by BC Graphics. The frames are 24"wide and 84" high,with 3" x 3" squares or grids'. There will be legs attached to the bottoms, that will be able to be inserted into the ground to keep them upright.

The students will create 2 1/2" fused class squares using donated/leftover glass. The fused glass squares will be fitted into grids on the fixture frames, with copper wire. The fused glass will be made with the assistance of local artist Jennifer Wells. http://www.jenniferwellsdesign.com/
















Students each created their own small piece...and then collaborated in small groups to create larger fused glass pieces.

MS. KRUGER'S THIRD GRADE CLASS

TILE INLAID PLANTER BOXES

What do you do with eight square feet of tumbled marble leftover from a tile shower? Turn them into planter boxes!

Each sheet of tile will become a 'side' of a pair of wood planter boxes. The custom planter boxes are being made with IPE by BCS dad, Jeff Behnke.

Students were then lead through creating small drawings that depicted nature...flowers...trees... leaves. Their small drawings were transfered onto the tiles and sealed. Each child's name is also represented on in random tiles on both boxes.

The Ipe wood has been oiled to further protect against the elements.

MS. MILLER'S THIRD GRADE CLASS

"AROUND THE BLOCK"
MOSAIC TILE COFFEE TABLE

The third grade is studying their community. A tile table is going to be made with their curriculum in mind. Each student will be drawing a house on a tile...these tiles will be set around the perimeter of the table to create a 'city block'. Around the house tiles, the students will fill the space with mosaic trees and sky.


A table was 'reclaimed' off craigslist to use in the project. The table top is 40" x 22", stained wood, with a small drawer. All the tile that is used is recycled seconds tile from Pratt and Larson. Local artist Barb Welty will be assisting the children with their house tiles and the mosaics. Barb taught an after school collage class at the Fernwood Campus this fall, and will be teaching a maps class in the winter. barbwelty@yahoo.com

When the table is finished, it will look like an aerial view of a city block, surrounded by beautiful trees!

Barb Welty collaborated with the students in drawing their own house on a tile. The students used porcelain pens on tile donated by Pratt and Larson.

MS. BARRY'S SECOND GRADE CLASS

BEVERLY CLEARY BOOKCASE

Inspired by Beverly Cleary's Henry Huggins series and the "square white house" that he lived in, we're creating a book house which will be decorated with images that the class will cull from the Henry Huggins stories and then illustrate with paper cuts after a lesson from a local artist. The paper cuts will in turn be used as stencils to decorate the bookcase.

Built from birch plywood that is FSC certified and formaldehyde free, the shelf will be decorated using eco-friendly paints and finish. Since this is a piece of children's furniture we thought it was best not to used scrap materials with unknown origins. This heirloom quality bookcase was built by local contractor and carpenter, Joel Elsom, the uncle of a Beverly Cleary Hollyrood student.



Local publisher, Top Shelf Comix, has donated a stack of kids books to help fill the shelves. A kids library consultation by Chloe Eudaly is included. and a $30 gift certificate to Reading Frenzy for the lucky winner.

MS. HICKEY'S SECOND GRADE CLASS

CERAMIC PLATES

Bisque Plates. Oh stack of plates...what will you be...stay tuned and you will see.

Ms Hickey's art infused 2nd grade class had the opportunity in creating their own work. A series of landscapes, still life's, and abstracts by the students were the inspiration for the ceramic plates.

The students then had the opportunity to transfer their drawn image, as a painted image on the bisque plates. The glazed plates were then fired in a kiln. They will be offered at the auction as sets of plates:

Abstract Set was created by: Mia Dorney, Elise Hudson, Claire Miller, Denice Owen, Ian Panoscha, Dylan Petersen and Sam Taylor.

The Landscape was created set by: Audrey Byerly, Rowan Hamilton, Liam Krug, Aidan Martin, Calvin Mosher, Benjamin Shiffman, and Lilly Smith, Jacob Cushman.

The Still Life set was created by Helen Calidonio, Ella DeMerritt, Parker McCollum, Reese Nelson, Kinnon Rutherford, Katia Schnieder, Zoe Shaw, and Ella Weeks.
