LEAF RIMMED FIREPIT

What could be better than to cozy up around this wonderful custom firepit...on a cool evening. Break out the firewood...roasting sticks...and marshmellows!

The 6th grade students drew their interpretation of a variety of indigenous leaves. The leaves were copied in metal by local metal artist Marion Gilliland, http://www.marsue.com/ . ...copied the fine details of each leaf that each student drew.

The iron leaves have been welded around the rim of the firepit in a random and natural pattern.

MS. ROSS AND MS. TANNER'S FOURTH GRADE CLASSES

FUSED GLASS GARDEN TRELLISES

The two fourth grade classes will be making a pair of metal garden trellises. The trellis frames are black clothing fixture grid frames, donated by BC Graphics. The frames are 24"wide and 84" high, with 3" x 3" squares or grids'. There will be legs attached to the bottoms, that will be able to be inserted into the ground to keep them upright.

The students will create 2 1/2" fused class squares using donated/leftover glass. The fused glass squares will be fitted into grids on the fixture frames, with copper wire. The fused glass will be made with the assistance of local artist Jennifer Wells. http://www.jenniferwellsdesign.com/

Students each created their own small piece...and then collaborated in small groups to create larger fused glass pieces.

TILE INLAID PLANTER BOXES

What do you do with eight square feet of tumbled marble leftover from a tile shower? Turn them into planter boxes!

Each sheet of tile will become a 'side' of a pair of wood planter boxes. The custom planter boxes are being made with IPE by BCS dad, Jeff Behnke.

Students were then lead through creating small drawings that depicted nature...flowers...trees... leaves. Their small drawings were transfered onto the tiles and sealed. Each child's name is also represented on in random tiles on both boxes.

The Ipe wood has been oiled to further protect against the elements.

MS. MILLER'S THIRD GRADE CLASS

"AROUND THE BLOCK"
MOSAIC TILE COFFEE TABLE

The third grade is studying their community. A tile table is going to be made with their curriculum in mind. Each student will be drawing a house on a tile...these tiles will be set around the perimeter of the table to create a 'city block'. Around the house tiles, the students will fill the space with mosaic trees and sky.

A table was 'reclaimed' off craigslist to use in the project. The table top is 40" x 22", stained wood, with a small drawer. All the tile that is used is recycled seconds tile from Pratt and Larson. Local artist Barb Welty will be assisting the children with their house tiles and the mosaics. Barb taught an after school collage class at the Fernwood Campus this fall, and will be teaching a maps class in the winter. barbwelty@yahoo.com

When the table is finished, it will look like an aerial view of a city block, surrounded by beautiful trees!

Barb Welty collaborated with the students in drawing their own house on a tile. The students used porcelain pens on tile donated by Pratt and Larson.

MS. BARRY'S SECOND GRADE CLASS

BEVERLY CLEARY BOOKCASE

Inspired by Beverly Cleary's Henry Huggins series and the "square white house" that he lived in, we're creating a book house which will be decorated with images that the class will cull from the Henry Huggins stories and then illustrate with paper cuts after a lesson from a local artist. The paper cuts will in turn be used as stencils to decorate the bookcase.

Built from birch plywood that is FSC certified and formaldehyde free, the shelf will be decorated using eco-friendly paints and finish. Since this is a piece of children's furniture we thought it was best not to used scrap materials with unknown origins. This heirloom quality bookcase was built by local contractor and carpenter, Joel Elsom, the uncle of a Beverly Cleary Hollyrood student.

Local publisher, Top Shelf Comix, has donated a stack of kids books to help fill the shelves. A kids library consultation by Chloe Eudaly is included. and a $30 gift certificate to Reading Frenzy for the lucky winner.

MS. MORRIS'S FIRST GRADE CLASS

MOSAIC BIRD BATH AND BENCH

The students in Ms. Morris's first grade class had the opportunity to learn the art of mosaic. A cast cement flower bird bath and bench are the base of the mosaic projects. On a nice brisk day in December...the students were able to take turns in the school garden carefully placing the glass mosaics.

The top of the bird bath is in the shape of a flower....

Can't you see the completed bench or bird bath in your garden?

BATIK PRINTS

Each student created their own image with the techniques of batik. Batik is the process of applying melted wax to a fabric surface before being dipped in dye. The wax prevents the dye from soaking into the areas were the wax was applied. The wax is then dissolved off of the fabric. The fabric dye colors in the finished pieces are blue, yellow, purple, and green. A series of small 4” x 4” batik images are showcased in two 24” x 24” black shadow box frames. They are highlighted with a light green linen matte.

FUSED GLASS WITH KURUMI CONLEY

The students in Ms. Hart's first grade class are collaborating with local glass artist Kurumi Conley to create a nature inspired glass platter.

Precut pieces of glass were available for the students to choose their own invidual colors. Each students created their own small butterfly image, that that then was set as a larger rectangular patchwork platter.

The transparency of the background highlights the colors and tectures of each small image.

FISH ON STRETCHED CANVAS
One, two, three, four, five,
Once I caught a fish alive,
Six, seven, eight, nine, ten,
Then I let him go again.
Why did yo let him go?
Because he bit my finger so!
Which finger did he bite?
This little finger on the right!
Local Artist Jennifer Mercede collaborated with Ms. Miller's kindergarten class to create a large fish painting on stretched canvas. The students chose several colorful fish that Jennifer transfered with pencil onto the canvas. She taught them about balance and composition. Then each student had the opportunity to paint and fill in the drawings....adding pattern and embelishments.
Students continued to add color with crayons and paint, plus adding fine details.

MS. SHUE'S KINDERGARTEN CLASS

WOOD BLOCK
FOUND OBJECT
COLLAGES

The kids have been asked to collect and bring into class, natural objects that are small. The colors they’re using are blues, greens, and some white, silver and gold. They will paint some of the objects, so there’s a little flexibility on color. The blocks were cut in 1” and 2” thickness, using a leftover 4 x 4 fir post. The sides have been coated with Modge Podge, tops have been painted by the students, and given a coat of ‘sparkle’. Each student will then have the opportunity to collage the top of their block using the materials brought to class to share.
Thank you to George Ramos for cutting the wood blocks. http://www.georgreramoswoodworking.com/

Suggested Items for the collage:

- leaves for imprinting
- small shells or pebbles
- sand or glitter
- glass, wood, or natural-looking beads
- small interesting twigs
- beach glass, or marbles
- small magazine cutouts
- feathers or dried flowers
- cloth flowers or leaves
- dried seed pods

On several different occasions the students were able to add stenciling and embelishments to their wood blocks.

Kindergartener Willa Gagnon adds details to her wood block.

This finished project is mounted on a birch plywood with a clear finish.

FUSED GLASS NEIGHBORHOOD

The kindergarten students in Ms. Shue's class also had the opportunity to create a project with local glass artist, Jennifer Wells. Each child created their own small house with glass. A series of fused glass houses will be set into the panes of a recycled window sash. Check out Jennifer's website at http://www.jenniferwellsdesign.com/ .
